Natte Valleij Cinsault Swartland 2017


Natte Valleij farm is situated at the base of the Simonsberg, where winemaker Alex Milner makes wine with minimal interference and pretence. A large part of his focus is on Cinsault and exploring the character this grape exhibits in different vineyard locations. 

“Bush vines planted in 1986 on decomposed Malmesbury shale. The vineyard is situated on an eastern facing slope, which catches the early morning sun and a beautiful block to be in at sunrise. Picked in mid-February. Destalked with 20% of the stems being left to dry in the sun fro the day and then added back into the tank for fermentation. Fermentation spans 10 days with only manual pigeage allowing lovely seductive tannin extraction. The wine is then pressed in our manual basket press. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally in 2500L French foudre, named Susanna. It is ahead for 12 months in foudre. Bright fruits with a lovely textured structure, almost blowsy and lively in its character. Perfumed red fruits and an elegance of length.” Alex Milner.
